Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is derived its name from :

      Physical medicine is a branch of medicine using Physical agents (e.g. light, heat, water, electricity and  mechanical agents) in the management of disease. AND

      Rehabilitation the treatment and training of patients to attain the maximal potential  for normal living  physically, psychologically, socially and vocationally.

Objectives :

      Evaluate, assess and plan for management of disabilit y.
 Prevent or correct disability by Physical Modalities as well as surgical intervention.

 Enhance systems unaffected by the pathologic condition.
 Enhance functional capacity of persons with locomotor disability affected by the disease.
 Use of adaptive devices and equipment to promote function.
 Modify social and vocational environment.
 Psychological evaluation and counselling to enhance patient performance for persons with  Mental Retardation  and Mental illness.
 Co-ordinate among professionals like Occupational therapist, Physiotherapist,  Prosthetist and  Orthotist,Rehabilitation nurse, Speech therapist, Social worker,
   Clinical psychologist as a team leader to impart medical care to patient.

 Undertake three year DNB (PMR) course.
 Research activities.

Academic :

 DNB (PMR) course of three year duration with intake capacity of two per year with hostel
    facility and stipend of Rs. 5000 per month.

 Actively involved in teaching programmes of all the courses.
 Around ten short term courses, seminars and hands on workshops on locomotor disability per year.
Weekly seminar, case presentation and journal discussions.

Services :

 Hospital                                   

     Out Patient Department

Patients on an average 150-200 per day attend the OPD having locomotor disability, musculoskeletal disorders, speech and hearing problems requiring treatment and rehabilitation with facilities for X-Ray, Laboratory investigations, Plaster work, Physiotherapy and Occupational therapy and Speech therapy services.

Immunization programmes from time to time as per pulse polio immunization   programmes are carried out.

Dispensary functions for providing medicine and other minor services.

           
            
Inpatient Services                

Out of 100 beds, 85 beds including cabin for surgical and physio-occupational therapy management of all varieties of locomotor disabilities like limb length discrepancy (Ilizarov), Paraplegics, hemiplegics, C.P., Leprosy, P.P.R.P., Congenital deformities including CTEV and all other problems requiring medical and surgical rehabilitation. Other indoor patients requiring physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy are also admitted for rehabilitation. 15 beds are available for fitment of Prosthesis and Orthosis for Persons with disability who do not need rigid hospital life.


            Reconstructive and Special Surgery

All types of reconstructive surgery for congenital deformities, cured leprosy patients, Polio and Cerebral Palsy patients are conducted here. Special surgeries like Arthroscopy for sports injuries, hand reconstruction surgeries, UMEX fixator system and Ilizarov surgeries for limb length discrepancy and deformity correction are regularly conducted in this Institute.

     Investigations                                                                                       
         

              Radiological investigation facilities for indoor and outdoor patients are available with modern X-Ray machines. About 100 X-Rays are done daily. Pathological investigations both for inpatients and out patients are available. Routine and special biochemical, pathological and haematological tests are conducted.

            Operation theatres

Minor OT
- Minor surgical work is carried out.
Major OT
- 2 nos. Well equipped operation theatres with C.Arm (Image Intensifier) operating microscope, Arthroscope, Pulse Oximeter, Defibrillator, Cardiac Monitor, Peripheral nerve stimulator etc. used for carrying out major corrective, reconstructive and rehabilitation surgeries.

Speech and Hearing Services

Assessments of speech handicapped such as deaf, misarticulation, stroke, language disorders, voice problem and stuttering etc. are carried out. Speech therapy to all types of speech handicapped is provided. Hearing also distributed under ADIP Scheme.

Psychological counselling

·         Psychological services and counselling for the persons with disabilities in the areas of mental health and psycho-social illness.

·         Services like cognitive therapy and behaviour therapy, memory training, concentration and meditation, stress management and adjustment in the society and life situations.

·         Play therapy, music therapy, special education and vocational guidance for self-employment and self-management.

·         Counselling and guidance and home management programme for parents/care takers of persons with mental retardation, Cerebral Palsy and multiple disabilities.

Social and Vocational Rehabilitation Services

·        Assessment of Socio-psychological and vocational state of the disabled persons.

·         Providing necessary counselling and guidance to cope with socio-psychological and vocational problems and enabling them to lead a productive life.

·         Helping them in getting different Govt. benefits and concessions such as study scholarships, disability allowance, financial assistance/loan for education, training, employment and self-employment.

·        Issuing Train concession certificates.                   

     Vocational Training Programme :

NIRTAR has its own vocational training centre  which is imparting  vocational  training  to  the persons  with  disabilities in  different  trades,  like  Applique work (Canopy work), screen  printing,   fancy  jute   article  making,     wool    knitting,  tailoring  and  garments  making, fabric painting     etc.   They    are   also    referred  to   different  vocational  training  centres  for other suitable training programmes. Main objectives are to  :

        ·        Create confidence and awareness about their residual abilities
        ·       
Provide training opportunities to develop skills and knowledge so as to enhance scope of employability.
        ·       
Make them economically independent and socially integrated.

      Placement and Employment Services

NIRTAR has been notified by Govt. of India as Special Employment Exchange to recommend the names of eligible orthopaedically disabled persons for job placements in Public Sector undertakin, Govt. office and private organisations for Group A, B, C and D categories job.

Research :

Forty scientific papers have been presented during Annual conferences of Indian Association of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Indian Orthopaedics Association and Orissa Orthopaedic Association.
