Department of Physiotherapy :

Physiotherapy is the branch of modern treatment that deals with the diseases and disorders by physical/natural means. It is not merely application of physical modalities, but it includes evaluation, assessment, treatment planning and treatment application, re-assessment, modification of treatment programmes and advice to the client.

Objectives :

To undertake long term 4 ˝ years BPT course, 2 years M.P.T. (Rehab.) course and short term
    courses for qualified therapists and other health and rehabilitation professionals.
Evaluate, assess, plan and execute physical therapy treatment and advise patients attending   
    the department.
To undertake Research activities.

Academic :

Long-term courses :

Bachelor of Physiotherapy course of 4 ˝ years duration with intake capacity 20. The minimum
    educational qualification for the entry is 50% marks at +2 Science with Physics, Chemistry and
    Biology.

Master of Physiotherapy (Rehabilitation) course 2 years duration with intake capacity 5.

Both are affiliated to Utkal University, Bhubaneswar.

Apart from classroom lectures, clinical and practical demonstrations, weekly seminars, case presentations, journal discussions, etc. are also arranged for students, interns and M.P.T. (Rehab.) students. About 180 students have completed their B.P.T. course and are successfully placed in different hospitals/Institutes within the country and abroad. Study tour is a part of study programme, usually the final year students visit various institutes of the country for two weeks.

Short term courses  :

It conducts short orientation courses for qualified Physiotherapists of the country and for the persons with disabilities and their family members also. The participants are paid TA and DA as per Government rules.

Services :

The department of P.T. caters services to both out and in patients. Patients anr allotted to therapists who evaluate, assess and plan out the treatment and execute the therapy. Difficult and problematic cases are discussed in the departmental meetings and therapeutic measures appropriate for them are given. Suitable “Home exercise programmes“ are advised to patients.

Electrotherapy – Electrical stimulation, Interferential therapy, TENS etc
Actinotherapy – Ultraviolet, Infrared Radiation, LASER etc.
Heat therapy – Paraffin wax bath, moist heat, Ultrasound, Short Wave Diathermy,
    Microwave Diathermy etc.
Exercise therapy
Manual therapy including traction and soft tissue manipulation
Hydrotherapy and Cryotherapy
Misc- CDG-Gait analyser, KIN KOM-Isokinetic unit, Pulsed Electromagnetic energy, Biofeedback etc.

The Department of Physiotherapy, NIRTAR has got the following sections to cater the needs of services and academic activities of the students.

Pain Clinics:Spine, Joints, various musculoskeletal disorders including sports injuries are treated by mobilisation, manipulation, traction and electrotherapy etc.
Paediatrics Clinics:Cerebral palsy etc. conditions are treated by Developmental therapy, normal movement therapy, motor learning programme etc..
Neuro. ClinicsStroke, Spinal Cord Injury, Myopathy etc. Neuromuscular conditions are treated by normal movement therapy. Proprioceptive Neuromuscular facilitation technique, Motor Relearning programme etc.
General P.T. Clinic:Amputee, various pre and post operative conditions, hand rehabilitation, Hansen’s disease, Burn, Cardiac, Respiratory, Vascular, Obstetrics and Gynaecological etc. conditions are treated/rehabilitated.

Research :

Fourteen scientific papers have been presented during Annual conferences of the Indian Association of Physiotherapists among which two are published in the national Physiotherapy Journal.
